FREEDOM

of speech

Re-imagined photography art of Norman Rockwell's Freedom of Speech

A principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. The term freedom of expression is usually used synonymously but, in legal sense, includes any activity of seeking, receiving, and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

Freedom of speech is understood to be fundamental in a democracy. The norms on limiting freedom of expression mean that public debate may not be completely suppressed even in times of emergency.

Everyone should grow up believing that they have the right to express their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. Let’s raise children to be confident in their voices. To feel safe that their opinions matter and won’t get them hurt. Make them believe that their words are just as valuable as anyone else’s.
