BEACH PARTY ^

• Posted by Lou • June 28 2016 • Comments Off

The University of Havana has developed a custom that has nothing to do with academic matters—in fact, it couldn’t be more different. This new “extra-curricular” activity, which rapidly gained in popularity, began on the last day of the European Football Cup. A group of fun-loving college students decided to organize a beach party.

OBAMA VISITS CUBA ^

• Posted by Lan Sergeant • March 20 2016 • Comments Off

Today was absolutely surreal, as the streets were nearly empty in the several hours before Obama’s arrival. Sundays in Havana are generally quiet, as Cubans, family-oriented as they are, go en masse to swimming pools or to the beaches in the outskirts of the city. Adding to that the fact that most Cubans didn’t bother going out into the city due to rumors that everything would be closed in anticipation of higher than normal security needs for Obama’s visit, Havana was like a ghost town.

THE ADONIA BLAZING THE TRAIL ^

• Posted by Victoria Alcalá • May 16 2016 • Comments Off

Many people might wonder why all the fuss by the arrival of the Adonia at Havana Harbor, on May 1, 2016. After all, the arrival of cruise ships is nothing new in the Cuban capital (in 2015 alone, European cruises brought approximately 20,000 passengers). But the answer is very simple: it is the first one to come from the United States after more than half a century.

CUBA'S BEST BEACH ^

• Posted by Juliet Barclay • Jun 3 2016 • Comments Off

“Urban travel sophisticates may try and persuade you that to find the real authentic Cuba, you need to get away from the beach. While this may be true, you will be missing out on crystal-clear waters, fine golden sand whether in a virgin backwater in Isla de la Juventud or in mecca-to-decadent tourism in an all-inclusive in Varadero. Let’s be honest: they all have their virtues! In this piece, Juliet Barclay sets out to find the best beach in Cuba…it’s a tough assignment, but someone has to do it!”

FAST AND FURIOURS 8 IN CUBA ^

• Posted by Victoria Alcalá • June 10 2016 • Comments Off

It’s becoming in thing to say that Cuba is the in thing. Whoever repeats that phrase immediately waves a list of the celebrities who have visited the Island during the past year as irrefutable proof. But anyone who has even a sketchy knowledge of Cuban history knows that this vogue goes way back to the 19th century. Between then and now an incalculable list of famous people has visited Cuba for one reason or another, from the great Austrian ballerina Fanny Elssler to sopranos Adelina Patti and Marietta Gazzaniga—the latter was honored by Havana bakers of the time when they concocted a cake that has come down to our day: the popular gaceñiga.

-Travel Tips-

Tips you need to know before you travel to Cuba

Travel Insurance for Cuba & Tourist Visa Card

Documents Required for all travelers visiting Cuba:

  • Passport valid for six months after the date of your arrival in Cuba
  • Cuba tourist visa issued by the Cuban consulate in accordance with planned activities and the length of your stay on the island
  • Proof of travel medical insurance (valid insurance policy covering your medical expenses during the time of your stay in Cuba)
  • A Return ticket

Cuba Visa Requirements

  • You need to get a tourist visa before travelling to Cuba, generally available from your airline, travel agents or direct from Cuban consulates located in many countries.
  • A Tourist Visa for Cuba can also be issued on the spot once you've cleared customs. Do not lose this document, you’ll need it for departure. The tourist visa is valid for a single entry and allows tourists to stay in Cuba for 30 days or 90 days for Canadian citizens.
  • For travelers, obtaining a visa extension once in Cuba is easy through your hotel reception or at the immigration office in most Cuban towns by presenting your documents + CUC$25 in stamps sold in various Cuban banks.

Money tips for Cuba

  • Take cash with you
  • Take Euros or GBP Sterling to get the best exchange rate
  • Don’t take Aussie dollars. Don’t take American dollars, the exchange rate will be terrible plus you have to pay an extra fee every time
  • Cuba has two currencies:CUC (Cuban convertible peso or ‘Cuban dollar’) aligned to USD which tourists must use, and CUP (Cuban national peso) worth around 1 CUC = 22 CUP
  • Non-Cubans shouldn’t have any CUPs on them – though people do. As Cuba-/USA relations ease, the likelihood of the CUC disappearing and the CUP remaining is high. US dollars will also probably become more accepted too
